After our last adventure camping by the sea, Eva and I left the ocean and went to Cataviña for an evening of motorcycle desert camping and cooking. We made some stops along the way to explore this part of Baja California and ended the evening at a perfect Baja motorcycle desert camping location. Today’s ride started on the Bay of San Quintín and traveled south for 150 miles to Cataviña. It’s important to get gasoline in El Rosario before heading further south.

Good Morning Coffee!
We woke up at our campsite on the Pacific Ocean at Mariscos Alvaroz seafood restaurant. It was a perfect place to brew a cup of morning coffee!
The Rugged Road to La Lobera
We headed toward the ocean on this dirt road just to the north of El Rosario because we hear that there is an unusual attraction out on the coastline at this location. The road was just challenging enough to be fun on our motorcycles – a BMW 850 GS and Husqvarna 701 long range.
Sea Lions
La Lobera is a natural cave that is formed in the rock along the coastline. The cave is filled with sea lions, most of which were hiding in the shadows in the picture above.
Pacific Ocean at La Lobera
This is a beautiful place to enjoy the rugged coast of the Pacific Ocean and I would definitely recommend riding out to this location as it was a fun diversion from the paved highway.
Highway to Cataviña
After a long and hot ride across the middle of the peninsula the landscape changes abruptly with the appearance of unique rock formations and cacti signaling the arrival to Cataviña.
Cool Desert Plants and Cacti
Cataviña is a very small town with few services. The main attraction for me is the desert landscape with the beautiful rock formations and plants. I’ve always enjoyed spending the night in this area camping in the desert.
Cataviña Rock Formations
Here’s a typical and very unique rock formation. Notice how “clean” the desert floor is, which makes it very easy and enjoyable to walk around and explore.
Our Motorcycle Campsite in the Desert
We found a perfect spot to pitch our tents for some great motorcycle camping in the desert.
Campfire Cooking in the Desert
We built a small fire and cooked some supper as the evening light began to fade into a spectacular desert sunset. This was a perfect way to end a great day with some epic Baja motorcycle desert camping.
