For the past two and a half years we have been working on a feature length documentary about an amazing race that takes place in Mexico each spring. The race is known as the Ultra Marathon Caballo Blanco, a 50-mile foot-race designed to help promote and preserve the running culture of the Tarahumara Indians living in Mexico’s Copper Canyons. For centuries, running has been a part of their culture, but problems like draught, loss of their native lands and the drug war have affected them greatly and they don’t run as much as they used to. Micah True was an American ultra-runner from Boulder, CO who lived and ran with the Tarahumara and wanted to help them, so he created the race that bears his name. Each spring, hundredss of Tarahumara runners would compete with international runners from around the world in the small village of Urique, Chihuahua. Every finisher was awarded 500 pounds of corn. The race was featured in Christopher McDougall’s best selling (2009) book “Born to Run – A Hidden Tribe, Super Athletes and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen”. It has been our privilege to work with Micah True and all of the race participants on this project and we are very pleased to begin sharing our footage with the world in our upcoming documentary.
