Fujifilm Mirrorless Cameras
I’ve been using Fujifilm mirrorless cameras since 2019 and it’s become my favorite system for a number of reasons. The cameras are very small but powerful when it comes to performance in the field. I love the tactile analog design and the footage that comes out of these cameras meets my needs.
Fujifilm X-T4 Mirrorless Camera
This is my main video camera which meets all of my needs. It is compact, rugged and shoots very high quality, cinematic video.
Fujifilm X-T3 Mirrorless Camera
This was a my first Fujifilm mirrorless camera and I’ve been using it for about 5 years now. It has been a workhorse and many of my videos have been filmed with this little beast.
Fujifilm Zoom Lenses
Zoom lenses are an important part of my filmmaking kit. They offer the convenience of covering a wider focal range than prime lenses, which means that I don’t have to change lenses as often in the field. I use these lenses primarily during the daytime when there is a lot of light and I’m not as concerned with shallow depth of field.
This is my wide angle zoom lens for shooting outside during the daytime. I often pair this with my 55-200mm zoom lens to give myself a wide range of focal lengths.
This weather sealed lens makes an ideal “all around” travel lens with a wide range of focal lengths. I don’t use it that often but if I had to pick just one lens for travel this would be suitable.
Fujinon XF18-55mmF2.8-4 R LM OIS
This is the ‘kit lens’ that came with my first Fujifilm mirrorless camera. It’s a surprisingly good all-around lens with decent image quality and compact size. i would highly recommend this lens to anyone getting started with a Fujifilm camera setup.
Fujifilm XF55-200mmF3.5-4.8 R LM OIS
Because I often film outdoors in vast natural landscapes, I wanted a long lens without the cost or weight of premium glass. I opted for this lens and I don’t regret it. This is the zoom lens that I use the most and the longest lens I own.
Prime Lenses
Prime lenses have a fixed focal length which means that they are smaller, lighter, better quality and more expensive. But the images that they deliver are far superior to zoom lenses. These are some of the prime lenses that I use.
Laowa 9mm f/2.8 Zero-D Ultra-Wide Angle Lens
This is an ultra-wide prime lens with manual focus and very little distortion. I use it for filming big landscapes, inside of small spaces and astro photography
If I had to choose one prime lens this would be it. The 16mm f1.4 lens is an all around beast with great image quality and a comfortable wide angle field of view. It has a short minimum focus distance so it works well for getting wide shots and close ups. The fast 1.4 aperture makes it great for low light filming in the evening around the campsite.
This is a smaller, more compact 16mm lens that works well but doesn’t have the characteristics of the larger, more expensive 1.4 version. If I really needed to conserve space I would use this one.
This is a very small lens with a very ‘normal’ field of view equivalent to 50mm on a full-frame sensor. Like all of the “fujicron” primes, it’s rugged, affordable and compact.
This is one of my favorite lenses and it pairs well with the 16mm f1.4 lens in the low-light of the evening around the campsite. The 16mm is great for the wider shots and this is useful to get the details.
If I had to pick one prime lens that I love the most in terms of sharpness, image quality and overall “look” this would be it. The images that I get from this lens never fails to amaze me with their colors and the rendering of the bokeh in the background. This is a difficult lens for self filming as the focal length is so long that the camera has to be positioned very far away in oder to get myself in the frame. Nonetheless, I absolutely love the poetry that comes out of this lens.
Tripod
Peak Design Travel Tripod (Carbon Fiber)
A good tripod is essential for the type of solo filmmaking that I do. I use this premium carbon fiber tripod because it is lightweight and packs up incredibly small. I love its design and ease of use.
Camera Straps
Peak Design Slide Camera Strap and Peak Design Slide Lite Camera Strap
I have both of these straps and prefer the lighter one most of the time. The anchor system is brilliant and works well. I’ve attached similar anchors to my drone controller so that I can film myself walking without holding the drone controller in my hands.
Case
Nanuk 918 Waterproof Hard Carrying Case
I use this case to hold all of my camera gear on the back of my motorcycle. It is lightweight, rugged and waterproof. The latches are secure, lockable and quiet when opening or closing the case. I purchased the version which contains the removable padded interior to protect my cameras and lenses while riding. Unlike other camera bags that I use, there are no zippers that can fail in the dusty conditionsI in which I travel.
